Yesterday I took my elderly mother and dog for a walk along one city park trails here in Leavenworth. This particular trail passes near a junior high school which was letting out about the time we took our walk. The kids within a mile or so simply walk home. Typically when this happens, the Aussie is a big hit. Kids would speak and want to pet him. He loves it and mom would get a kick out of it also. Yesterday was different. I saw some kids coming along the trail walking home and they were all masked. Outside, warm sunny day, wearing masks. No one stopped to visit the dog, they moved to the far side of the trail and didn't get close. The look in their eyes was one of fear. Glance and look away. We are teaching kids to fear. Not a reasonable fear with situational awareness, but a pathological fear of others where casual contact can be deadly. This is mental abuse.
